Veselka to celebrate 40 years of Ukrainian dance on Vancouver Island

On May 21 and 22 Victoria's Veselka Ukrainian Dancers will host two events to celebrate their 40th anniversary.

Veselka (meaning Rainbow) entertains audiences sev eral times throughout the year at various local events, including
Heritage Day, Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival and Folkfest in Victoria, as well as at events in Mission (BC Ukrainian Cultural Festival), Vancouver (Expo 86), Alberta (Vegreville Pysanka Festival), Seattle (Folklife), San Diego, and beyond.

I had the privilege of speaking with Wendy Swan, Veselka's spokesperson and a Veselka instructor and former student, on Nash Holos recently.

We chatted about Veselka's fascinating history (and present!) as well as their upcoming 40th anniversary celebrations. The interview aired on this week's show (Vancouver: May 8; International: May 13).

Veselka invites the public as well as past and present dancers to join the fun and excitement.

On Saturday, May 21 they'll host an anniversary gala featuring The Kubasonics of Edmonton, fabulous Ukrainian food and recognitions and reminiscences spanning 40 years of Ukrainian dance on Vancouver Island. The gala will be held at the Leonardo da Vinci hall, 195 Bay Street in Victoria. Tickets are $75 and going fast, so book now: 250-391-6115 or visit their website.

On Sunday, May 22 they`ll be on stage for an evening performance at the MacPherson Playhouse theatre in downtown Victoria at 7:30pm. Tickets: $15 and are also going fast so book soon through the McPherson Theatre Box office or at their website.

In the meantime, here`s a sneak preview for you:
