Vancouver's well-known and beloved foodie Sylvia Pidraziuk Molnar has returned to the airwaves! Her first return feature aired on the May 8, 2011 edition of Nash Holos Ukrainian Roots Radio.
Sylvia will be alternating weeks with Natalia Buchok, who made her radio debut on Sunday, May 22, 2011.
I first met Natalia ages ago through our mutual writing mentor, Marsha Skrypuch. Natalia and I are both first-time authors published in Kobzar's Children.
Although she works full time as a family therapist, Natalka loves writing and devotes as much time as she can to write. She also loves her Ukrainian heritage. So although she has two novels on the go, she recently agreed to work on an interesting project ... translating a Ukrainian book written circa 1929 in Lviv with a title that translates as Galician Cuisine in English.
With her busy schedule, it was a given that this Ukrainian-English translation project would be a long ongoing one. It occured to me that it could easily translate into a radio project at the same time. But the question was, did Natalka have time? She'd never translated a book before, nor had she ever done radio before, so taking this project on represented a wee bit of a learning curve for her in addition to the time commitment.
Well, then I had a flash of brilliance ... if I do say so myself. LOL
I thought I'd see if I could lure Sylvia out of retirement. After all, she'd been a regular fixture on Nash Holos going back to the early 1990s. And I know from first-hand experience that once you get bitten by the radio bug, you pretty much stay bitten!
As it turned out, I was right. After a couple of years off the air, Sylvia did miss doing radio. However she also loved being retired and is one of those crazy folks who end up being busier in retirement than when they were working!
So between the three of us, we came up with the perfect solution.
Thanks to the wonders of technology, Sylvia and Natalia could share the microphone, hosting Ukrainian Food Flair on alternate weeks.
Now, even with the three of us in different locations, Nash Holos is able to return Ukrainian Food Flair to the air, and bring listeners the best in Ukrainian recipes, food traditions, factoids and fun!

Wonderful--Sarah and I will look forward to listening to episodes online. We've received some additional funding for the Pickle Project so we head back to Ukraine for 3 weeks in late June--we'll keep you posted as we're traveling lots of places, and hopefully seeing lots of good food and talking with great cooks!
